1. Children’s Rights and Business Principles Online Consultation Process Launched
UNICEF, the UN Global Compact and Save the Children jointly launched an online consultation process (5 May, New York) for representatives of the business community to provide input on the Children’s Rights and Business Principles. The launch coincided with the first of a series of in-person global consultations to be held in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. More. Participate in the online consultation.

2. Business and Government Leaders Address Corruption through Partnerships
During the "Joining Forces against Corruption – G20 Business and Government” meeting (28 April, Paris), G20 leaders pledged closer engagement with the private sector to examine best practices and other forms of business engagement in combating corruption. The conference represented the first step in responding to the call to tackle corruption through stronger public-private partnerships. More.

3. Private Sector Focal Points Meet, Explore UN-Business Partnership Coherence
Over 100 representatives from across the UN system met (13 April, Paris) to discuss common issues that implicate their capacity to partner with the private sector, such as managing the UN brand, partnership selection and establishing joint due diligence processes. Joined by representatives from the private sector with experience partnering with the UN, the group also explored how to enhance partnerships and strengthen coherence across the UN system. More.

4. 2011 Arabia CSR Awards Open for Nomination
Hosted by the Arabia CSR Network and supported by the Global Compact, the Arabia CSR Awards (ACSRA) aim to recognize and highlight best practices in corporate responsibility in the Arab region (24 April, Dubai). Participation in the ACSRA’s seven categories is open to companies, public sector and civil society organizations from across the Arab region. More.

5. Participant Status: New Signatories, COPs and Delistings
In April, 95 companies and 44 non-business stakeholders joined the Global Compact. 47 companies were delisted for failing to communicate on progress. The largest companies (by employee number) to join during the month were: National Australia Bank (Australia), SAS Institute Inc. (US), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (India), Tiffany & Co. (US), Cargills (Ceylon) PLC (Sri Lanka), Hilding Anders International AB (Sweden), Coomeva Entidad Promotora de Salud S.A. (Colombia), Fives Group (France), HORIBA, Ltd. (Japan) and Comlink (China).

Total figures as of 30 April:
Business participants: 6,166
Non-business participants: 2,693
COPs accepted: 10,571
Delisted business participants: 2,307

ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

1. Low-Carbon Leaders Project: Call for Submissions and Feedback
The Low-Carbon Leaders Project (LCLP), a collaboration between Caring for Climate and the World Wildlife Fund, is an open source, multi-media platform aimed at capturing and sharing transformative low-carbon solutions. LCLP has issued twelve illustrative cases and toolkits for calculating the impacts of energy efficient solutions; additionally LCLP has collected over 100 low-carbon solutions estimated to help avoid over 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

LCLP encourages Caring for Climate signatories to submit, rate and comment on low-carbon solutions. For more information and to access the mobile application to rate these solutions, please visit the LCLP website.

1. UN Global Compact Week (16–20 May, Copenhagen)
– INVITATION ONLY – UN Global Compact Week will convene practitioners who are engaged in the initiative’s working groups, issue platforms and Local Networks. The Week will feature the Global Compact Annual Meeting, the Annual Local Networks Forum and a variety of issue-specific meetings. This global gathering of the most active companies and organizations is designed for working-level representatives to share experiences across issues and countries.

2. Children in Hazardous Work (24 May, Webinar)
– OPEN INVITATION – Experts from the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour will explain the characteristics of “hazardous work” and will provide practical guidance on how business can contribute to eliminate this worst form of child labour. A range of issues will be discussed including how to avoid use of child labour in supply chains and ensuring appropriate safety and health standards.

3. UN Global Compact-Accenture Sector-Specific CEO Study on Sustainability: Live Broadcast (25 May, Online)
– OPEN INVITATION – Launch of the UNGC-Accenture Industry CEO Study, the world’s largest industry-specific study on CEOs and Sustainability. The reports include overall industry insights and deep dives into 7 sectors including Consumer Goods, Communications, Banking, Utilities, Energy, Automotive, Infrastructure and Transportation Services from interviews with nearly 1000 CEOs from Global Compact companies. Speakers include Georg Kell, Executive Director of the Global Compact; Sander van’t Noordende, Group Chief Executive, Accenture Management Consulting; and Peter Lacy, Managing Director, Sustainability Services, Accenture. The launch will take place during a unique live broadcast - Sustainability 24 - bringing together business and government leaders to debate and discuss how companies are embedding sustainability into their organizations.

4. Webinars on the GC Advanced level of the COP Differentiation Programme (27 May/ 8 June, online)
– OPEN TO GLOBAL COMPACT BUSINESS PARTICIPANTS – This webinar will give an overview of recent updates to the COP Policy and introduce the newly launched Differentiation Programme with a special emphasis on the GC Advanced level. The webinar will cover the requirements for GC Advanced level qualification and introduce the 24 advanced criteria.

5. Principles for Responsible Management Education Summit (7–8 June, Brussels)
– OPEN INVITATION – Held under the theme of Partnership in Responsibility: Embedding PRME in Support of the Corporation of the 21st Century, the PRME Summit will foster dialogue between business, business schools and other stakeholders around responsible business challenges, needs and innovative business practices. It will provide a platform for educational institutions to interact, as well as address corporate expectations on management education/development.

6. Promoting Labour Standards through Corporate Social Responsibility: Instruments and Practices (20 – 24 June, Turin)
– OPEN INVITATION – This Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) training will focus on its potential to contribute to the respect for labour rights and the achievement of “decent work for all”. The training will provide participants with an overall understanding of the current trends and challenges in CSR, and will review relevant tools and resources.
